HSCL - Home School Community Liaison

As a DEIS School, we have a designated HSCL teacher to work with parents in a collaborative approach to help support them with their child’s educational journey. The main aim of the HSCL is to build relationships with parents so as to forge better links between home and school ensuring the child’s education and welfare is the common goal.

HSCL Main Areas of Focus Include:

  • Attendance & Punctuality

    • Attendance is of paramount importance. It is a legal requirement that every child receives an education up until the age of 16. Simply put, poor attendance equals poor educational attainment.

    • Should the school have concerns about a child’s absenteeism, by law we are required to report it to the Educational Welfare Officer.

    • If a child is absent due to illness / scheduled appointments or for urgent family reasons, explanations need to be inputted on the Aladdin School App or alternatively speak directly to the HSCL or class teacher

  • Transitions

    • The HSCL teacher works very closely with all incoming Junior Infants and 6th Class parents as to help support them as their child transitions from pre school to primary school and 6th class to secondary school.

    • These transitions can be daunting and challenging at times but made all the easier with dedicated one to one support offered by the HSCL

  • Partnership With Parents

    • A child’s educational journey is enhanced when both school and home work together to ensure the child reaches his / her full potential

    • Here at St. James’s, we appreciate the importance of investing in our parents and ensuring that relationships which are built on trust and respect are formed, valued and maintained

    • We very much value the parental voice and encourage a collaborative approach between home and school

    • Throughout the school year we welcome and encourage parents and guardians to participate in whole school activities together with more targeted parental courses that enable parents to upskill, relax and enjoy time with others

    • The HSCL is linked with many services in the community and therefore can support parents and families in many different ways. If you have a worry or concern that you need help or support with, please contact the HSCL

  • Partnership With Others

    • We pride ourselves on the excellent relationships that we have built with services and organisations in our community that both enhance and compliment the teaching and learning that happens in our wonderful school

    • The children have the opportunity to take part in wonderful programmes that encourage the children to grow, learn and achieve success in many different areas

    • Our community links include Trinity, UCD, St. James’s Hospital, The Digital Hub, Creativity in the Classroom, Business in the Community, Junior Achievement, Wizard of Words to name but a few
